DĂșn-Laoghaire Rathdown County Council's Social Inclusion Unit is part of the local authority's Economic Development and Community Department. The Unit was one of eight pilot units established by the Department of Environment, Heritage, and Local Government in January 2002 to mainstream social inclusion throughout local authorities in Ireland. The unit was placed on a permanent footing in 2006.
The Unit is responsible for conducting research into local social exclusion issues that will inform the Local Authority as well as the County Development Board in their efforts to create sustainable and inclusive Communities.
The Unit is also responsible for promoting and mainstreaming social inclusion within the County Council by proofing programmes, policies, and activities; and ensuring that no group is excluded or disadvantaged from accessing public services. Where feasible the Unit promotes active participation by vulnerable groups in all aspects of public service delivery.
